Trauttmannsdorff castle – The extraordinary world of plants

The Trauttmannsdorff castle is a favourite attraction in the area of Merano, famous South Tyrolean holiday location. The towering castle stands in the middle of one of Italy’s most beautiful gardens: the “Botanic Garden”. Opened to the public for the first time in 2001, the structure occupies 12 hectares with 80 fascinating thematic gardens, water fountains, artificial lakes and grottos.
“Sissi”, empress of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, spent several months here in 1870 and 1889, as a guest of count Trauttmannsdorff, making this castle particularly famous.
Together with her daughters and court servants she was staying in the rooms that are now occupied by the „Touriseum”, the museum of tourism in South Tyrol. The museum shows the history of local tourism through the years by means of a rich body of documentation. Sunny terraces around the castle offer great opportunities to contemplate the view, particularly those overlooking Merano, the Val D’Adige and the stunning magic of the surrounding mountains.
