Mining museum and climatic gallery in Predoi
The historic copper extraction site in Predoi has been converted into a museum as part of Bolzano’s District Museum. Extraction activity began in the XV century and lasted until 1990.
Visitors can now enter the site with the original train, descending into the old Saint Ignazio tunnel down to a depth of 1000m. Guided tours to the old „Grubenbahnhof“ give visitors an interesting insight into the mining tradition in Val Aurina.
The mining’s site external facilities have been largely preserved as they were in the original plant. A very thorough exhibition of typical mining objects and historical documentation is on display in the old granary.
The so-called “climatic tunnel” for “climatic-therapy” is only 100 meters away from the main museum gallery. The tunnel’s unique microclimatic conditions are such that patients with respiratory system and lung problems or allergies such as hay fever, find great relief breathing the beneficial air within this special gallery.
