Messner Mountain Museum
South Tyrolean climber Reinhold Messner is one of the world’s most famous professional climbers. He has invested years of his time to the creation of the „Messner Mountain Museum – MMM“ in his homeland. MMM is a very special museum project distributed across five sites and dedicated to the alpine world and its inhabitants.
„MMM Firmian“ in the Firmiano castle, near Bolzano, was the first exhibition that Reinhold Messner opened in 2006, a very thorough display on the local art and the history of alpinism.
„MMM Dolomites“ in Monte Rite near Cortina is dedicated to the theme of ‘rocks’ and includes displays of paintings and sculptures from the Dolomites.
The „MMM Juval“, in the Juval castle near Naturno, includes a collection of objects and photographs from or about the mountains, notably the so-called „Tibetica“ collection.
„MMM Ortles“ is a fascinating underground museum in Val Venosta, designed around the theme „worlds of ice and the world’s glaciers”.
The „MMM Ripa“ is due to open in 2010 in the castle of Brunico, Val Pusteria with an exhibition on the life and traditions of mountain populations.
